David Rugara – Head of School – Lincoln International Business School– Staff Profile

Summary:

Students benefit through becoming more adept at discussing themes, topics and challenges in an experienced and engaged way. It has the additional advantage of being fun and different for students, shown in positive student feedback. In this example, the academic develops a scenario where the student plays the role of a business manager with a problem to solve. This can be themed around leadership, ethics or even legal issues. Other students role-play other scenario characters (in this instance, these were students from the School of Fine and Performing Arts for whom this was an excellent opportunity to practice their improvisation skills).

The activity was provided by David Rugara from the Lincoln International Business School. By simulating real-life problems through role-play and capturing this for subsequent critical review and evaluation enables the students to apply theory to practice. The role-playing drama is filmed using Panopto meaning that while the live action takes place in the moment, students have the benefit of being able to subsequently review their performance as many times as they like. The academic is also able to provide individual feedback to each student on their performance. The actual roleplaying performance itself is not part of the assessment. But this performance, and the availability of session recordings, is integral to the assessment as students are tasked with writing a reflective essay critically evaluating their own performance, and their key learning points. In simple terms, this is a form of simulation designed for students to experience something they might not otherwise be able to, with the added advantage of being able to re-visit that experience at will.

Further development:

To develop this activity further, students could give peer-feedback and brain storm group solutions to support skills development and application.
